THE ENGLISH MAJOR

The Bachelor of Arts English major offers preparation for a number of
professions through its dual emphasis:
(1) a core of literature, writing, and criticism courses, and
(2) a program of major electives selected by the student.

Core courses enable a student to deepen knowledge of a variety of literatures
and practice critical thinking, writing, and interpretation skills. These are
foundational to a number of professions.

Major elective courses allow the student to develop skills and knowledge
important to professions that benefit from studies in literature and writing.

The English major core includes the following, for a total of 27 hours:

Besides the required major core courses, students are to choose 4 courses
from the following list of major electives:

Open Electives

The additional hours for the Bachelor of Arts degree are open electives. They may be used for a second major, a minor, or even a Defiance College-approved foreign language study program.
